Half marathon 2 hour pace: how to run a sub-2-hour half

Half marathon 2 hour pace is 5:41 per km or 9:09 per mile. Splits, why sub-2 sits on the men's median, key sessions, a week with lifting, race pacing.

Half marathon 2 hour pace is 5:41 per kilometer, or 9:09 per mile. Hold it for 21.0975 km and you finish in 2:00:00 exactly. Which is precisely the problem: "exactly" isn't "under", and the half marathon has thirteen miles of opportunities to lose a few seconds.

Sub-2 is the most popular time goal in half marathon running, and it's a good one: a round number that takes real training but not your whole life. This post covers what pace a 2 hour half marathon needs, why you should run a little quicker than it, how sub-2 compares with real race data, the sessions that build it, a week that keeps your lifting, and how to pace race day so mile 11 isn't a negotiation. Plan it yourself or let a smarter running app build the weeks around your gym days.

What pace is a 2 hour half marathon?

The math: 2 hours is 7,200 seconds. A half marathon is 21.0975 km. 7,200 ÷ 21.0975 is 341 seconds, or 5:41 per km. Multiply by 1.609344 for miles and you get 549 seconds: 9:09 per mile.

If you want to test other targets, work out your race pace with a calculator. The conversion tables and goal paces for every common distance live in the running pace guide, and these numbers match it.

2 hour half marathon pace per mile and per km, with a buffer

Target finishPer kmPer mile
2:00:005:419:09
1:59:305:409:07
1:59:055:399:05
1:58:005:369:00

Plan around 9:05 per mile or 5:38 to 5:39 per km. That gives you roughly a minute of slack for the realities of road racing: crowded starts, water stations, and the fact that you'll almost certainly run further than 21.0975 km because nobody runs the measured line. Your watch will often show more than 13.1 miles at the finish. Its pace readout will flatter you accordingly.

Sub-2 half marathon splits

Even pace for exactly 2:00:00:

10 km56:535 miles45:46
15 km1:25:1910 miles1:31:32
20 km1:53:4513 miles1:59:00

Write the 10 km and 10 mile splits on your hand. If you're at or ahead of 56:53 and 1:31:32 without having raced the first half, you're in good shape.

How sub-2 compares with the field

RunRepeat's percentile calculator, built from millions of race results, gives these median half marathon times: 2:14:59 overall, 1:59:48 for men and 2:24:03 for women.

Look at the men's median. Sub-2 sits almost exactly on it: a 1:59:47 is faster than the middle male finisher by one second. For women, sub-2 is about 24 minutes faster than the median. Overall, it's about 15 minutes ahead of the middle of the field.

So sub-2 is a genuinely good half, and calling it "average" undersells the people who run it. Medians are the middle of everyone who trained and showed up, not the middle of the couch.

What fitness a sub-2 half usually takes

This is coaching practice, not a promise. Runners who break 2 hours typically have:

  • Enough speed. Plug a recent 5K into a calculator. If it predicts a half well under 2:00, speed isn't your limiter. If it predicts 2:05, you need faster running as well as longer running. For reference, 20 minute 5k pace is 4:00 per km and 25min 5k pace is 5:00 per km, both comfortably quicker than 5:41.
  • Enough endurance. This is where most attempts fail. A long run that's grown to 10 to 12 miles, and weeks of three to five runs, mostly easy.
  • A threshold near goal pace. Half marathon pace for most recreational runners sits a little slower than threshold. If 5:41 per km feels like tempo effort, good. If it feels like a race, you're not ready yet.

The best evidence is a training session: 3 × 3 km at 5:38 to 5:40, with 3 minutes easy jogging, done in the last month of the build. Controlled throughout? Sub-2 is on.

Key workouts for a sub-2 half marathon

One or two quality sessions a week, depending on how many days you run. The half rewards sustained efforts more than short, sharp ones.

Goal-pace blocks

Start with 3 × 2 km at 5:38 to 5:41, 3 minutes easy between. Build to 3 × 3 km, then 2 × 5 km. The goal isn't faster reps; it's more time at goal pace with the pace feeling steadier.

Tempo runs

20 to 30 minutes continuous at "comfortably hard", or 2 × 15 minutes with 3 minutes easy. A little faster than goal pace, RPE 7–8, a few words at a time. This lifts the ceiling above race pace so race pace feels sustainable.

Long run with a fast finish

Every second or third long run in the last six weeks: run easy for most of it, then finish the last 2 to 3 miles at 9:05 to 9:09. It teaches you to hold goal pace on tired legs, which is the entire second half of the race.

Mile repeats at 10K effort

5 × 1 mile at roughly 10K effort with 2 minutes jogging, early in the build. They build speed reserve without turning into a 5K session.

A sub-2 half marathon week

Four runs, two lifts, for the middle of the build:

DayRunLift
MonRestUpper body
TueGoal-pace blocks or tempo—
WedEasy 35–45 minLower (moderate, low volume)
ThuEasy 30–40 min + strides—
FriRestOptional light full body
SatLong run, 8–12 miles—
SunEasy 20–30 min or rest—

Rules:

  • Quality run Tuesday, heavy-ish legs Wednesday. The day after is fine; the day before is not.
  • Nothing heavy the day before the long run. Saturday's long run is a hard day, even when it's slow.
  • Lifting holds, it doesn't build. Two or three hard sets of a squat or hinge, single-leg work, calves. Skip the PR attempts until after the race.

Taper for the half

Cut volume, keep a little speed. A meta-analysis by Bosquet et al. (2007) found that a two-week taper with training volume cut by 41–60%, while intensity and frequency were maintained, was the most effective approach in the studies it pooled. For a half, many runners do something like 10 to 14 days.

In practice: last long run about two weeks out, a short goal-pace session in race week (something like 3 × 1 km at 5:38), and the last real lower-body session about a week to ten days out.

Sub-2 race-day pacing

  • Miles 1–3: 9:10 to 9:15. Slightly slower than goal. Crowds, adrenaline and fresh legs all lie.
  • Miles 4–10: lock in 9:05. This is the race. Use the mile markers, not just the watch, because GPS drifts.
  • 10 miles: check the clock. 1:31:32 is exactly 2:00:00 pace. If you've been running 9:05s, you'll come through in about 1:30:50, which is your buffer. Now just hold it.
  • Last 5 km: everything left. If you paced the first half honestly, this is where you pass people.

Take water or fuel at the stations you practiced with on long runs. Nothing new on race day.

Where sub-2 points next

The 2-hour half connects to the marathon in a tidy way. A guide to sub 4 hour marathon pace is the same 5:41 per km, held for twice the distance, which is a very different problem. Faster runners aim for 3:30 marathon pace, 4:59 per km.

If you're asking what pace is a 1:30 half marathon, the answer is 4:16 per km or 6:52 per mile, which is also 3:00 marathon pace. At the other end, what pace is a 5 hour marathon? 7:07 per km, 11:27 per mile. And sub-3 marathon pace and training asks for 6:52 per mile for 26.2 miles, which tells you how fast a 1:30 half really is.

How exrsz handles a sub-2 half

exrsz builds a periodized half marathon plan from your goal, schedule, level and equipment, with running and lifting in one plan so the goal-pace session and the heavy legs day stay apart. It adapts each week to how you actually trained and reshuffles missed sessions so the build still lands on race day.

FAQ

What is the pace for a 2 hour half marathon?

5:41 per kilometer, or 9:09 per mile, held evenly for 21.0975 km. Aim for about 9:05 per mile to leave a buffer for extra distance and crowded water stations.

What is half marathon 2 hour pace per mile?

9:09 per mile. At that pace you pass 10 miles in 1:31:32 and 13 miles in 1:59:00.

Is a sub-2-hour half marathon good?

Yes. RunRepeat's medians are 2:14:59 overall, 1:59:48 for men and 2:24:03 for women, so sub-2 puts you ahead of the middle of the field (RunRepeat).

How long does it take to train for a sub-2 half marathon?

If you're already running regularly and have done a half, a focused 10 to 12 week block is common. From a newer running base, allow longer and expect sub-2 to take more than one race.

Can I lift weights while training for a sub-2 half?

Yes. Keep one or two strength sessions a week, keep volume low, and schedule heavy lower-body work away from both the quality session and the long run.
