Average 5K time for women (and what counts as good)
The average 5K time for women is 37:28, the median in RunRepeat's 35-million-result dataset. Percentiles, paces, and what a good time looks like for you.
The average 5K time for women is about 37 and a half minutes. More precisely, the middle female finisher in RunRepeat's race-results dataset, built from 35 million results across more than 28,000 races over 20 years (published 2017, updated 2024), crosses the line in 37:28. That's a median: half of women finished faster, half slower.
That's the number. The rest of this post covers the full spread of women's 5K times, the pace each one works out to, why "average" is a strange target, and what a good time looks like for you specifically. If you'd rather train toward your own number than the crowd's, a coach that builds your running week around your lifting will set your paces from your actual fitness.
Average 5K time for women: the data
RunRepeat publishes percentile times for women's 5K finishes. Read the 10th percentile as "10 in every 100 women finished faster than this". Here's the table, with the pace each time works out to:
| Percentile among women | 5K time | Pace per km | Pace per mile |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st (fastest) | 21:39 | ~4:20 | ~6:58 |
| 10th | 28:24 | ~5:41 | ~9:08 |
| 20th | 31:09 | ~6:14 | ~10:02 |
| 30th | 33:19 | ~6:40 | ~10:43 |
| 40th | 35:21 | ~7:04 | ~11:23 |
| 50th (median) | 37:28 | ~7:30 | ~12:04 |
| 60th | 39:47 | ~7:57 | ~12:48 |
| 70th | 42:36 | ~8:31 | ~13:43 |
| 80th | 46:23 | ~9:17 | ~14:56 |
| 90th | 52:24 | ~10:29 | ~16:52 |

RunRepeat also notes that a 30-minute 5K makes a woman faster than more than 70% of women in its data. So if sub-30 is on your list, it's a genuinely strong target, not a beginner's afterthought.
If you'd like a plan that turns that target into weeks of actual sessions, a structured plan for women who lift builds it around your strength training rather than on top of it.
Median, not mean
RunRepeat labels these as 50th-percentile times. That's the median, the runner in the exact middle of the field. For race times it's the more useful number anyway, because a handful of very slow walkers can drag a mean around. When people search "average 5K time female", the median is what they actually want: where the middle of the pack is.
Average time for a woman to run a 5K, in context
A median describes a crowd, and race crowds are mixed. A typical 5K field has club runners, first-timers, people pushing strollers, people running with friends, and people walking the whole thing. All valid. All in the data.
That's why the average time for a woman to run a 5K is a curiosity rather than a standard. What it tells you:
- Finishing is already an achievement. Most people never enter a race at all.
- Breaking 37:28 puts you in the faster half of women in RunRepeat's data.
- Breaking 30 puts you ahead of more than 70% of women in RunRepeat's data.
What it doesn't tell you: whether your time is good for you, given your age, training history, and the four weeks of bad sleep you had before the race.
If you landed here while searching for gifts for runners women actually want, the honest answer is a race entry and a plan to beat this table. The hub guide covers the rest of running for women, from pacing to racing.
What about average 5K time by age?
Here's where we're going to disappoint you on purpose. RunRepeat's calculator lets you compare yourself with your gender and age group, but its published page doesn't print a by-age table for women, and we're not going to invent one. A lot of "average 5K time by age" charts online come with no dataset behind them.
What we can say from general coaching practice:
- Age matters less than training history for most recreational runners. A 45-year-old with five years of consistent running will usually beat a 25-year-old who started last month.
- Comparing with your own age group is fairer than comparing with the whole field, so use an interactive calculator built on real race results if you want that number.
- The most honest benchmark is your own last 5K.
Average 5K time for women by experience
These bands are a coaching-practice guide, not a dataset. The dataset numbers are the percentiles above.
| Where you are | Typical goal |
|---|---|
| First 5K, walk-run | Finish comfortably. That's the whole job. |
| Running continuously for a few months | Run the whole 5K without walking, then chip away |
| Consistent for a year, three runs a week | Sub-35, then sub-30 |
| Several years, with structured speed work | Sub-30 comfortably, sub-25 as a stretch |
| Club runner | Sub-25, then sub-22 and beyond |
Notice what moves you down the table: years of consistent running and a little structure, not genetics or a special shoe.
How to run a faster 5K
The short version of what moves a 5K time:
- Run three or more times a week, mostly easy. Easy running builds the aerobic base that a 5K still leans on.
- Add one quality session. Intervals of 400 m to 1 km at around 5K effort, or a 15- to 25-minute tempo run at "comfortably hard".
- Do one slightly longer run. 40 to 70 minutes easy, depending on your level.
- Keep lifting. One or two strength sessions a week, heavy enough to matter, kept away from the day before your quality run.
- Warm up properly before races. Ten to 15 minutes of easy jogging and a few strides. Otherwise the first kilometer becomes your warm-up, at race pace.
There's more on how to run faster at every distance, but the principle is the same: mostly easy, a little hard, repeated for months.
If you've been searching for Hal Higdon 5K training, his plans are a popular starting point, and our 5K guide shows how to run a plan like that while keeping your lifting.
Lifting helps
Strength training is part of the answer, not a distraction from it. A systematic review of strength training in distance runners found running economy generally improved by 2–8% in the studies that measured it, compared with running alone. Better economy means your goal pace costs less.
Pacing on race day
Most 5Ks are lost in the first kilometer. Start at goal pace or a few seconds slower, settle by 2K, and save your push for the last kilometer. If you finish feeling like you had more, run the first half a touch faster next time. If you blew up at 3K, you know what to fix.
Your cycle and race day
Some women notice they feel better or worse at certain points in their cycle; plenty notice nothing at all. A 2020 meta-analysis found at most a trivial dip in performance in the early follicular phase (around your period), based on low-quality evidence, so tracking your own pattern beats any general rule. There's more on workout with menstruation and what the evidence actually says.
Beyond the 5K
Once 5K feels comfortable, the next steps are the shorter mile and the longer road races.
- The average mile run time for women is a different kind of benchmark: shorter, faster and much more about speed.
- The 10K is the natural next race. In the same RunRepeat dataset, the women's 10K median is 1:06:54.
- The half marathon is a big step up in endurance. There's more on how to train for a half marathon without giving up the gym. The average time for half marathon female runners in RunRepeat's data is 2:24:03.
- And the average marathon time for a woman is its own conversation, with its own training timeline.

The median women's 5K time in RunRepeat's dataset is 37:28, about 12:04 per mile. Half of women in that data finished faster, half slower.
Is a 30-minute 5K good for a woman?
Yes. RunRepeat notes that a 30-minute 5K makes a woman faster than more than 70% of women in its data. It's a strong first target.
What is a fast 5K time for a woman?
In RunRepeat's data, a time under 28:24 puts a woman in the fastest 10%, and under 21:39 puts her in the fastest 1%.
What is the average 5K pace for women?
At the women's median of 37:28, the pace works out to about 7:30 per kilometer or 12:04 per mile. Your own easy pace and race pace should come from your recent runs, not the median.
How long does it take a woman to train for a 5K?
From not running at all, most beginners need around 8 to 10 weeks to finish a 5K comfortably. If you already run, a focused 6- to 8-week block can take a meaningful chunk off your time.
