8 min mile marathon time: 3:29:45, plus the half and training

8 min mile marathon time is 3:29:45. The half finishes in 1:44:53. A per-mile finish-time grid, where it ranks, and the sessions that make 8:00 stick.

An 8 min mile marathon time is 3:29:45. Run every one of the 26.2 miles in exactly 8:00 and you cross the line 15 seconds under three and a half hours, assuming you run the official 42.195 km and not a meter more.

Most people find this number from the other direction: they know they can run 8:00 per mile, or they like how round it sounds, and they want to know what it adds up to. This post gives the finish time for the marathon and the half, a grid of finish times for paces either side of 8:00, where 3:29:45 ranks, and the sessions that turn "I can run 8:00s" into "I can run 8:00s for three and a half hours". Do the planning yourself, or use an app that plans your runs and your lifts in the same week.

8 min mile marathon time: the math

A marathon is 42.195 km, which is 26.219 miles. Multiply by 480 seconds (8:00) and you get 12,585 seconds: 3:29:45.

In kilometers, 8:00 per mile is 4:58 per km. If your watch shows kilometers, run 4:58s; 4:58 per km for the full distance finishes in about 3:29:34. To run the numbers for any other pace, calculate your goal pace the same way: pace times distance. For the min/mile to min/km tables and pace targets for every distance, the hub has all of it, and these numbers match.

8 min mile half marathon time

A half marathon is 21.0975 km, or 13.109 miles. At 8:00 per mile, the 8 min mile half marathon time is 1:44:53.

At the same pace, the shorter races:

Marathon finish times by pace per mile

Not quite an 8:00 runner? Here's the grid either side of it:

Pace per milePer kmMarathonHalf marathon

7:454:493:23:121:41:36

8:455:263:49:251:54:42
9:005:363:55:581:57:59

Every 15 seconds per mile is about six and a half minutes over a marathon. That's worth remembering when you're tempted to "bank time" in mile 2.

Where 3:29:45 ranks

According to RunRepeat's percentile calculator, the median marathon finish is 4:26:33 overall, 4:14:29 for men and 4:42:09 for women. Its table puts the 10th-percentile marathon at 3:31:46 for all runners, so a 3:29:45 is just inside the fastest tenth of the field.

By sex, the same page puts the men's 10th and 20th percentiles at 3:22:40 and 3:40:13, so an 8-minute-mile marathon sits between them. For women, the 10th percentile is 3:49:22, and 3:29:45 is almost 20 minutes inside it.

On the half, RunRepeat's table puts the 10th percentile at 1:47:10 for all runners, so a 1:44:53 half is inside the fastest tenth there too.

So yes: averaging 8:00 per mile for a marathon is a strong amateur result. It's 15 seconds faster than a 3:30, which has its own dedicated crowd of hopefuls.

Can you hold 8:00 for 26.2 miles?

Here's the trap. You run a 1:40 half, plug it into a race-time calculator, it predicts a marathon under 3:30, and you sign up for 8:00 per mile.

Those calculators are often built on the Riegel formula. In a survey of 2,303 recreational runners, Vickers and Vertosick (2016) found Riegel was well-calibrated for races up to the half marathon but dramatically underestimated marathon time, giving times at least 10 minutes too fast for half of runners. The marathon asks for endurance a half doesn't fully test.

Coaching rules of thumb for whether 8:00 is realistic:

  • A recent half meaningfully under 1:44:53. That's 8:00 pace for half the distance, so a 1:44 half means 8:00 is your half race pace. Most people need a half in the low 1:40s or faster.
  • Long runs that have reached 18 to 20 miles, with some marathon-pace miles late in them that felt controlled.
  • Five runs a week for months. Plans aimed around 3:30 commonly peak somewhere around 35 to 50 miles a week.

For a speed check from the other end: 1 30 half marathon pace is 6:52 per mile, more than a minute a mile faster than 8:00. And what is the pace for a 2 hour half marathon? 9:09 per mile. If that's your current half pace, you're a full block of training away from 8:00 for twice the distance.

Key workouts to make 8:00 per mile stick

The goal isn't just fitness. It's calibration: knowing what 8:00 feels like so well that you don't need your watch to hit it.

1. Pace-lock miles

On an easy-run day, after a warm-up: 4 × 1 mile at 8:00 with 2 minutes easy between. Run the first with your watch, then cover the screen for the next three and guess. Check after. When you're landing within 5 seconds, you have the feel. GPS drifts in cities and under trees; your legs shouldn't.

2. The 8:00 block on tired legs

Saturday: an easy 5 miles. Sunday: 16 to 18 miles, with miles 10 to 16 at 8:00 flat. Late in a long run is where marathon pace actually gets tested. Every second or third week in the last eight.

3. Cruise miles at 7:30

4 to 6 × 1 mile at about 7:30 (threshold effort for most 8:00 marathoners, RPE 7–8) with 60 seconds of jogging. Faster than goal on purpose: when 7:30 is controlled, 8:00 feels like cruising.

4. The 2 × 6 midweek

Two 6-mile blocks at 8:00 with a mile easy between, inside a 15-mile day, late in the build. It's the single best predictor session in this plan: if it feels steady, the goal is right.

5. A tune-up half

Four to six weeks out, race a half. Comfortably under 1:44:53 with a fast finish says the speed is there. Run it at 8:00 and suffer, and the marathon goal needs rethinking.

Heavy legs go on Wednesday, after the quality run and four days before the long run, never the day before it. Lifting maintains: a few hard sets of squats or deadlifts, single-leg work, calves and hips.

Race day at 8:00 per mile

  • Miles 1–3: 8:05 to 8:10. Patience costs about 30 seconds. Impatience costs minutes later.
  • Miles 4–20: 7:55 to 8:00. Check every mile marker. The math is easy: mile 10 at 1:20, mile 20 at 2:40.
  • Halfway: 1:44:30 to 1:45:30. Under 1:43 is a loan with a nasty interest rate.
  • Miles 20–26.2: hold 8:00. If there's anything left at 23, spend it then.

Fuel from early on. For events over 2.5 hours, Burke and colleagues (2011) put the target at up to 90 g of carbohydrate per hour. Practice your amount on long runs with the products you'll use on the day.

From 8:00 to the rest of the ladder

The 5K is a quick speed check. 20 minute 5k mile pace is 6:26, so a sub-20 runner has plenty of speed for 8:00; the marathon question is endurance. In between, 55 min 10k pace is 8:51 per mile. That's slower than 8:00, so a 55-minute 10K runner needs more speed before 8:00 for 26.2 miles is on the table.

At the slower end, the 11-minute-mile half marathon finishes in about 2:24:12. And here's what pace is a 5 hour marathon explained in one number: 11:27 per mile. At the faster end, sub 18 5k pace is 5:48 per mile. All of them are the same arithmetic: pace times distance.
