How old do you have to be to do Hyrox? Age rules, age groups and Youngstars
How old do you have to be to do Hyrox? 16 on race day for the adult race, 8 to 15 for Youngstars, and no upper limit in sight. The 26/27 rules, explained.
How old do you have to be to do Hyrox? Sixteen, on the day of the race. That's the rule in every 26/27 rulebook, singles, doubles, relay and adaptive. Younger athletes aged 8 to 15 have their own race, Hyrox Youngstars. And at the other end, the official age groups run all the way to 85 to 89.
So the age question is rarely "am I allowed?" It's "which race, which age group, and how do I train for it at my age?" This post answers all three, straight from the official rules. Once you're in, the next twelve weeks matter more than your birth year, which is the point of an app that builds your Hyrox plan.
How old do you have to be for Hyrox? The rule
The 26/27 singles rulebook puts it in one line: to take part in a Hyrox event, racers must be at least 16 years old on the day of the race. The doubles, relay and adaptive rulebooks use the same wording.
Three things follow from that:
- It's race day that counts, not booking day. If you turn 16 the week before the race, you're in.
- It applies to every division. Open, Pro, Doubles, Relay and Adaptive all share the minimum.
- There's no stated maximum. The rulebooks set a minimum age, not an upper limit, and the age groups go up to 85 to 89.
The race itself doesn't change with age either: the same eight 1 km runs and the 8 Hyrox stations in the same order. What changes is who you're ranked against. If you're 16 and racing for the first time, or 60 and racing for the first time, the preparation looks similar: a 12-week Hyrox training plan that builds the running and the station strength together, at a dose you can recover from.
Hyrox age groups
Results are ranked overall and by age group. Under the singles rulebook, the age groups are:
| Age group | Ages |
|---|---|
| Under 24 | 16–24 |
| 25–29 to 55–59 | Five-year bands |
| 60–64 to 85–89 | Five-year bands |
Your age group is set by your age on the day of your race. A few details from the rulebook that matter for older racers:
- Pro is open to every age group. Athletes can race Pro up to and including the 80+ age groups at regular races, with official age group rankings and podiums.
- 60+ qualifies for the World Championships through Open. Athletes aged 60 and above qualify via the Open division, and at the World Championships the 60+ age groups race the Open weights, reps and distances.
There's no separate "masters" race. Older racers run the same course, at the same weights for their division, and get ranked against people their own age. That's the fair part.
Doubles and Relay age groups
Team formats calculate age differently. In Hyrox Doubles and Relay, the team's average age decides the group:
- Doubles uses the same five-year bands as singles, set by the average age of the two partners on race day.
- Relay has only two age groups: Under 40 and 40+, set by the average age of all four members. The rulebook's example: members aged 24, 38, 48 and 40 average 37.5, so the team races Under 40.
Every member still has to be at least 16 on race day. An average doesn't get a 14-year-old onto a relay team.
Hyrox Youngstars: the race for 8 to 15
If you're under 16, the adult race is closed, but there's a separate format. The official HYROX Youngstars Birmingham page describes it as a race format specifically designed for ages 8 to 15, built from the foundations of the adult event.
What that page lays out:
- Age groups: boys and girls race separately in 8–9, 10–11, 12–13 and 14–15.
- Age on race day decides the category, not age at booking.
- The stations are adapted. The page lists the same eight stations, scaled: the sled push is 25 m, 8 to 9-year-olds do frog jumps instead of burpee broad jumps, and only ages 12+ throw the wall ball; younger athletes squat to a box.
- A guardian comes too. One legal guardian ticket is included in the entry fee, the child has to attend with the guardian named at booking, and staff check ID at check-in and check-out.
- The warm-up is mandatory, a 25-minute session run by Hyrox staff.
Youngstars races have their own event pages on hyrox.com, so check whether there's one at your event. At Birmingham, the adult race and Youngstars share the same weekend, which is convenient if a parent is racing too, though the page warns that start times won't be changed for either athlete.
Is Hyrox suitable for 16 and 17-year-olds?
The rulebook says 16 is old enough to enter. Whether a particular 16-year-old is ready is a training question, and the answer is the same as for anyone: can they keep moving for the whole race, and have they practiced the stations at the weight they'll use?
A few coaching rules of thumb for teenage racers:
- Start with Doubles or Relay. Both partners still run every kilometer in Doubles, but the station work is shared. Relay splits the race four ways.
- Learn technique before load. Squats, lunges, hinges and wall balls done well at light weight first, then heavier.
- Build running gradually. Easy, conversational running most of the time, not a race every session.
- Get a parent and, where relevant, a coach or doctor involved. Especially for anyone with a health condition.
Racing Hyrox in your 50s, 60s and beyond
The age groups exist because people do it. Racers in their 60s, 70s and 80s are ranked by the same rulebook as everyone else.
The training needs don't disappear with age, they just get dosed differently. In coaching practice, older athletes usually do better with more recovery between hard sessions, steady strength work all year, and a gradual build in running volume. If you're coming back after years off, or have a heart condition, joint replacement or anything clinical, check with your doctor before you start training hard.
If you're older and have an impairment that's permanent rather than age-related wear, the Adaptive race may be the better fit. Getting Hyrox Adaptive divisions explained properly covers the 13 divisions and who qualifies.
Hyrox vs CrossFit for older athletes
People often ask how is hyrox different from crossfit when they're deciding where to start. The short version: Hyrox is one fixed race with 8 km of running, the same every time, so you know exactly what you're training for. That predictability is useful at any age, and especially when recovery is your limiting factor.
What time should you expect at your age?
Age groups exist so you can compare yourself with people at the same stage. Finish times vary hugely by division, sex and age, and what time to aim for in Hyrox is a better guide than a number you saw on social media. For a first race, the honest target is finishing strong, then beating that time next season.
Before you enter
Two practical points that trip people up:
- Register under the right date of birth. Your age group comes from your age on race day, and the singles rulebook says the only way to register is via hyrox.com.
- Budget for the ticket. Prices vary by event and division, so the answer to how much does hyrox cost is always "check your event's page" before you commit.
How exrsz handles it
exrsz builds a periodized plan from your goal, schedule, level and equipment, with running and station strength in one plan. It adapts each week to how your training actually went, and reshuffles missed sessions instead of stacking them, which matters at any age.
FAQ
How old do you have to be to do Hyrox?
At least 16 years old on the day of the race. The 26/27 singles rulebook sets that minimum, and the doubles, relay and adaptive rulebooks use the same rule.
Can a 15-year-old do Hyrox?
Not the adult race. Athletes aged 8 to 15 can race Hyrox Youngstars, a separate format with scaled stations, where it's offered at an event.
Is there an age limit for Hyrox?
There's a minimum (16) but no stated maximum. Official age groups run in five-year bands up to 85 to 89.
How are Hyrox age groups decided?
By your age on race day. In Doubles, it's the average age of the two partners; in Relay, the average age of all four decides between Under 40 and 40+.
Can over-60s race Hyrox Pro?
Yes, at regular races. The singles rulebook allows Pro racing up to and including the 80+ age groups, but athletes aged 60 and above qualify for the World Championships through the Open division.
