How is Hyrox different from CrossFit? What's actually different

How is Hyrox different from CrossFit? One is a fixed race with 8 km of running, the other a varied training method with an online Open. The facts, side by side.

by exrsz

How is Hyrox different from CrossFit? Hyrox is a race with a fixed format: eight 1 km runs, each followed by the same eight stations, in the same order, at every event. CrossFit is a training methodology built on variety, with a competition season that starts with an online Open where the workouts are revealed one at a time. One rewards preparing for a known test. The other rewards being ready for anything.

Both involve wall balls, rowing and burpees, which is why people mix them up. The overlap is real, but the differences decide how you should train. This post sticks to what each organization says about itself, and if you're already set on racing Hyrox, a Hyrox app that adapts to your weak stations handles the training side.

Sources for each row are in the sections below. Hyrox details come from the 26/27 rulebook; CrossFit details come from crossfit.com and the CrossFit Games site.

The practical upshot: Hyrox is far easier to train for specifically. You can build this Hyrox training program around a race you already know move by move, which isn't possible for a competition that changes its tests.

What Hyrox is

Hyrox is a fitness race. Every event follows the same format, and the race page and the singles rulebook are explicit about it: run 1 km, complete one workout station, repeat eight times. The stations come in a fixed order: SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls. The format, stations and rules are all in our complete Hyrox guide.

A few facts that define it:

  • The format never changes. The official ticket pages describe Hyrox as a race "where each event follows the exact same race format", run in large indoor venues (HYROX Birmingham ticket page).
  • It's open to everyone. The singles rulebook says it's a race open to everyone, with no qualification needed to enter.
  • Weights are set by division. Only the loads change between divisions. The running is 8 km for everyone.
  • It's judged. Movement standards are enforced at every station, with warnings and time penalties.

What CrossFit is

CrossFit describes itself, on its own What Is CrossFit page, as "a global fitness brand with a community and a methodology of constantly varied functional movements performed at relative intensity". The same page says every CrossFit class is coached and every workout can be scaled.

That's the core difference in one phrase: constantly varied. CrossFit training deliberately changes from day to day. Hyrox deliberately doesn't.

The CrossFit Open

CrossFit's competition season starts with the Open. According to the CrossFit Games Open overview, the 2027 Open runs February 18 to March 8 and is virtual:

  • 3 weeks, 3 workouts. Workouts are released on Thursdays at 12 p.m. PT and scores are due by Monday at 5 p.m. PT.
  • Anywhere. You complete the workouts at a CrossFit affiliate or at your home gym, then submit your score.
  • Three versions of each workout. The page shows Rx, Scaled and Foundations versions, so there's one for every level.
  • A path forward. The top 25% of individual and age-group athletes from the Open move on to the next stage, the quarterfinals.

So in CrossFit's flagship competition, you find out what you're doing when the workout is released. In Hyrox, you know the test before you even buy the ticket.

How is Hyrox different from CrossFit in practice?

1. Known test vs unknown test

This is the big one. Hyrox gives you eight stations and eight kilometers, in order, every time. CrossFit's methodology is variety, and the Open releases its workouts week by week. Hyrox training can be narrow and specific. CrossFit training has to be broad.

2. How much running

Running is the backbone of Hyrox. In the first scientific study of the race, a simulated Open-division Hyrox with 11 recreational athletes, the runs took a median of 51.2 minutes and the stations 32.8 minutes (Brandt et al., 2025). An analysis of Pro and Elite results across the first seven seasons found running consistently accounted for about 50% of total race time (Rappelt et al., 2026).

In CrossFit, running appears when a workout calls for it. It isn't a fixed share of anything.

3. What the physiology rewards

Brandt and colleagues concluded that Hyrox emphasizes endurance capacity and has "moderate to low requirements in terms of maximum strength, coordination, and mobility when compared to other forms" of high-intensity functional training. In their small sample, faster finish times were associated with higher VO2 max and more endurance training volume.

That doesn't make Hyrox easy. It means the engine matters more than the gymnastics. CrossFit's own Open example on the overview page, a mix of pull-ups, double-unders, thrusters and bar muscle-ups in its Rx version, shows a much broader skill demand.

4. How you scale

CrossFit scales the workout: Rx, Scaled or Foundations, and in class, a coach adjusts it for you. Hyrox scales by entry. You pick a division, and the division sets the loads. Women Pro uses the Men Open loads, Pro is heavier than Open, and Doubles and Relay share the work. Choosing which Hyrox division to enter is the closest thing Hyrox has to picking Rx or Scaled.

5. Where and how you compete

Hyrox racing happens in person, in waves, on a full course with a Roxzone, judges and timing chips. The CrossFit Open happens in your affiliate or home gym, with scores submitted online. Both have leaderboards. Only one has you pushing a sled down a lane while a judge watches your feet.

6. How results compare

Because the Hyrox format never changes, a time from one event is comparable with a time from another, and with your own time from last season. That's what makes Hyrox times meaningful as a benchmark: you can see exactly which stations and runs got faster. CrossFit Open scores are tied to that year's workouts.

Racing with a partner or a team

Both sports have team options, but they work differently. In Hyrox Doubles, partners split the station work however they like, but both run every kilometer together; the doubles rulebook gives a 1-minute penalty if one runs ahead. If you're wondering how does Hyrox Doubles work for a CrossFit pair, it's the running together that surprises people. Relay teams of four each run 2 x 1 km and do 2 stations.

Is Hyrox harder than CrossFit?

Different, not harder. A Hyrox race is long and continuous: Brandt's simulated race took a median of 86.5 minutes. The difficulty is sustaining work for that long with no break between running and stations. The answer to is Hyrox hard is that it's as hard as the pace you choose, because everything is known in advance and only your pacing decides how much it hurts.

CrossFit workouts vary in length and skill demand, so the hard part is being ready for whatever is announced.

Who can do each

Hyrox is open to anyone 16 or older. The singles rulebook says racers must be at least 16 on race day, which settles how old you have to be to do Hyrox for the adult race.

Hyrox also runs separate Adaptive divisions for women and men under its own adaptive rulebook, grouped by impairment, each with its own standards. If you're asking what Hyrox Adaptive men and women race, it's the same run-and-station concept with standards built for each category.

CrossFit's What Is CrossFit page says the methodology is designed to meet people where they are, from beginners to competitive athletes.

Should a CrossFitter try Hyrox?

If you train CrossFit, you already have some of the station skills: wall balls, rowing, burpees, lifting. The gap is usually the running. Eight kilometers broken up by heavy stations is a very different demand from a short varied workout, and the research above suggests running is where most of the race time sits.

A sensible switch: keep lifting, add easy running volume gradually, and practice running straight after stations. You can find official Hyrox training gyms through the Hyrox gym finder.

How exrsz handles it

exrsz builds a periodized plan from your goal, schedule, level and equipment, so a CrossFitter racing Hyrox gets the running volume and the station work in one plan. It adapts each week to how your training went and reshuffles missed sessions instead of stacking them.

FAQ

How is Hyrox different from CrossFit?

Hyrox is a fixed race of eight 1 km runs and eight stations in the same order at every event. CrossFit is a methodology of constantly varied functional movements, and its Open competition releases new workouts each week.

Is Hyrox part of CrossFit?

No. They're separate organizations. Hyrox runs its own races under its own rulebook, and CrossFit runs its own competition season, starting with the Open.

Is Hyrox more running than CrossFit?

Yes. Every Hyrox division runs 8 km, and in a study of Pro and Elite results running accounted for about 50% of total race time (Rappelt et al., 2026). CrossFit workouts include running only when the workout calls for it.

Can CrossFit athletes do well in Hyrox?

They start with useful station skills, but running capacity matters a lot. A simulated-race study linked faster Hyrox times with higher VO2 max and more endurance training volume (Brandt et al., 2025).

Do you know the Hyrox workout in advance?

Yes. The stations, distances, order and division weights are set in the rulebook and are the same at every event. CrossFit Open workouts, by contrast, are released one per week.
