How hard is Hyrox? An honest answer for runners, lifters and everyone else
How hard is Hyrox? Hard enough that nothing after the first kilometer is fresh, doable enough that you pick the pace. What makes it tough, by background.
How hard is Hyrox? Hard in a specific way: none of the eight stations is extreme on its own, and 8 km is not a long run, but you never get to do any of it fresh. Every station starts out of breath from a run, and every run starts on legs that just pushed, pulled, jumped, carried or lunged. Hyrox's own guide says you'll be out there for an average of 90 minutes.
The good news: you set the pace. There's no qualification to enter, and the format is identical at every race, so you can prepare for exactly what's coming. Below is an honest breakdown of what makes Hyrox hard, who finds which part hardest, and how to make it manageable. If you'd rather have the preparation planned for you, a Hyrox training app can take that off your hands.
Is Hyrox hard? The short answer
Yes, if you race it. No, not unreasonably, if you pace it.
The race is a 1 km run followed by one station, repeated eight times, per the singles rulebook. The rulebook also says the race is open to everyone and no qualification is required. Plenty of people finish their first Hyrox by running easy, moving steadily through the stations and walking where they need to. Plenty of others go out at 10K pace on run 1 and spend the sled push regretting it.
So the real answer to "is Hyrox hard" is: it's as hard as the gap between your fitness and your ambition. Close the gap from both sides. Train for a few months with a Hyrox schedule that fits a normal week, and pick a pace you can hold for the whole thing.
If you're not sure what the eight stations even are, get Hyrox explained first. Then come back.
What makes Hyrox hard
1. Nothing is done fresh
This is the whole trick. A 1,000 m row is fine. A 1,000 m row after four runs, two sleds and 80 m of burpee broad jumps is not the same exercise. The difficulty is cumulative, and it peaks at the end: sandbag lunges after seven kilometers, then 100 wall balls.
2. The running never goes away
Every division runs the same 8 km. Lighter weights don't shorten the runs, and a stronger partner in Doubles doesn't run any of your kilometers for you. If running is your weak side, Hyrox exposes it eight times.
3. The heavy stations come early
The sled push and sled pull are stations 2 and 3. They're the heaviest loads in the race, and they hit your legs before you've even reached the halfway point. A slow, grinding sled push makes the next run feel like wading.
4. The rules are strict
Station order is fixed, every station has movement standards, and wall balls have no warnings: a rep or a no-rep. Missing a run lap costs 3 to 7 minutes depending on the venue. The race doesn't get harder because of the rules, but sloppy reps cost you extra work.
5. Your brain wants to quit around kilometer six
This is coaching experience rather than a rule: the lunges and wall balls are where races fall apart, because they're long, repetitive and come when you're most tired. Having a plan for them (a rep scheme, a pace) makes them dramatically easier to face.
How hard is Hyrox for runners?
If you come from running, the 8 km won't scare you. The stations will.
Runners usually find the sleds hardest, then the lunges and wall balls. The problem is strength and muscular endurance, not fitness. A runner with weak legs under load can lose a lot of time on the sled push alone, and the first few hundred meters after it feel nothing like normal running.
What to do about it: lift two or three times a week (squats, lunges, deadlift variations, carries) and practice running straight after station work. Your engine is already built. Give it legs to work with.
How hard is Hyrox for lifters?
If you come from the gym, the sleds won't scare you. The 8 km will.
Lifters usually find the running hardest, especially the later kilometers, plus the high-rep stations like burpee broad jumps and wall balls. Strength gets you through the sleds quickly; it doesn't help much on the eighth kilometer.
What to do about it: more easy running, built gradually over months. Most of it slow enough to hold a conversation. The engine is built slowly, and there isn't a shortcut. Add one harder run a week once the base is there.
How hard is Hyrox for beginners?
If you're starting from neither running nor lifting, Hyrox is a big but reachable goal. Give yourself time: a few months of consistent training rather than a few heroic weeks. Start with easy running, basic full-body strength and station technique.
The format helps beginners more than it seems. You know every station in advance. You know the order. Nothing is a surprise on race day, which means everything can be practiced.
Make it easier: choose your division
The division you pick changes the difficulty more than anything else on race day.
- Open is the standard race and the right first choice for almost everyone.
- Pro is the same race with heavier weights. Women Pro uses the Men Open loads. Going straight to Pro for a first race makes the hard parts harder. The difference between Open vs Pro is bigger than it looks on paper.
- Doubles halves the station work (roughly) but not the running. Both partners still run every kilometer.
- Relay splits the whole race four ways, with each person running 2 x 1 km and doing 2 stations.
If you want the gentlest first experience, Hyrox Doubles or Relay is the way in. You still get the atmosphere, the course and the finish line, with less station work per person.
How long does it take, and what's a normal time?
Hyrox says the race takes an average of 90 minutes. A 700,000-result analysis reported by BoxLife Magazine puts the median Men's Open finish at 1:27:56 and Women's Open at 1:36:20.
That's a long time to work hard, which is another reason pacing matters: an hour and a half is closer to a half marathon effort than a 5K. The breakdown of average Hyrox finish times by division, and why you shouldn't compare yourself to them too much, is worth reading before you set a goal.
The part nobody trains
Some of the time in that 90 minutes isn't running or station work at all. It's moving between the run course and the stations. Understanding what is Roxzone time in Hyrox and moving through it with purpose is the easiest time you'll ever save. Nobody gets fitter in the Roxzone, but plenty of people get slower there.
Is Hyrox harder than a marathon or CrossFit?
Different, not harder. A marathon is much longer and almost purely aerobic. Hyrox is shorter, mixes heavy strength work into the running, and asks you to switch between the two eight times.
Compared with CrossFit, the big difference is predictability. A CrossFit competition can throw anything at you. Hyrox never changes, so it's easier to prepare for and harder to excuse. The full comparison of Hyrox vs CrossFit comes down to that.
Who can do Hyrox?
The singles rulebook says racers must be at least 16 on race day, and individual results are ranked in five-year age groups up to 85 to 89. So a guide to how old do you have to be to do Hyrox starts with a short answer, 16, and the age groups show the race is built for people well past retirement age too.
Adaptive athletes race under their own adaptive rulebook, which sets 13 divisions with their own standards. The short version of what is Hyrox Adaptive men explained is that men and women race in categories grouped by impairment, so "how hard" depends on the category as much as the athlete.
How to make Hyrox less hard
- Train for a few months. Most structured plans run around 8 to 16 weeks.
- Build the engine with easy running. It makes every kilometer cheaper.
- Get stronger for the stations. Especially legs and grip.
- Practice running off stations. The first few hundred meters after a sled push is a skill.
- Pace run 1 like it's run 7. You'll thank yourself at the lunges.
- Have a wall ball plan. Sets you can hold, decided in training.
How exrsz makes it manageable
exrsz builds a periodized plan from your race date, schedule, level and equipment, with running and station strength in one plan so neither side gets ignored. It adapts each week to how your training went and reshuffles missed sessions, so a busy week doesn't derail the build.
FAQ
Is Hyrox hard for beginners?
It's challenging but achievable. There's no qualification to enter, and with a few months of consistent running, strength and station practice, most beginners can finish comfortably in the Open division or Doubles.
How hard is Hyrox compared to a half marathon?
Hyrox has less running (8 km) but adds eight strength and conditioning stations. Hyrox says racers are out for an average of 90 minutes, so the overall effort duration is closer to a half marathon than a 5K.
What is the hardest part of Hyrox?
It depends on your background. In coaching practice, runners usually find the sleds and lunges hardest, while lifters usually struggle most with the running and the wall balls at the end.
Can you walk during Hyrox?
Yes. Nothing in the rulebook requires you to run at a particular pace, and many first-timers walk parts of the runs. You do have to complete every run lap and every station in full.
Is Hyrox Doubles easier?
The station work is shared, so it's easier on strength and muscular endurance. The running isn't: both partners run every kilometer together.
